BECON-TV’S PAST MILESTONES

1966
Established through Title I funds as Instructional Television (ITV) to provide programming for culturally disadvantaged students and in-service programs for teachers.

1977
Cable companies in Broward began to provide the school district with community broadcast time on a limited basis.

1984
Usage was expanded to general educational purposes for all students.

1997
Introduced video conferencing and distance learning via two-way, interactive, compressed video.

2000
Purchased community broadcast channel licensed by the FCC to provide non-commercial educational programming (WBEC-TV).

2001
BECON’s Broward Virtual Education (BVEd) secures license through Florida Virtual for Broward’s online high school.

2003
Broward Virtual School introduces the online virtual high school.

2005
Broward Virtual School introduces the online virtual middle school.

2009
Broward Virtual School introduces the online virtual elementary school.

Broward Teen News, BTN, wins the Student Teen News challenge at the National Affiliates Convention in California.
