Then at the end of the year we will have a contest where students will identify the community where we obtained each item. The children will keep a travel journal as if they were recording what they did at each stop on our journey. The journal will be an effective writing experience supplementing the basic design of the course, which is to improve students’ reading skills. The series will begin with lessons about the nature of communities and a look at our own community. Then we will move out across America. The Holocaust curriculum, Creating Communities, will be a primary source of instructional material along with trade books and other children’s literature.
