1966 – Established through Title I funds as Instructional Television (ITV) to provide programming for culturally disadvantaged students and in-service programs for teachers.
1977 – Cable companies in Broward began to provide the school district with community broadcast time on a limited basis.
1984 – Usage was expanded to general educational purposes for all students.
1997 – Introduced videoconferencing and distance learning via two-way, interactive, compressed video.
2000 – Purchased community broadcast channel licensed by the FCC to provide non-commercial educational programming (WBEC-TV).
2001 – BECON’s Broward Virtual Education (BVEd) secures license through Florida Virtual for Broward’s online high school.
2003 – Broward Virtual School introduces the online virtual high school.
2005 – Broward Virtual School introduces the online virtual middle school.
2009 – Broward Virtual School introduces the online virtual elementary school.
